happy new year Happy New Year & A Scavenger Hunt Surprise

Happy new year! I hoped yours started off swimmingly!

I ushered in the new year with a group of 6 in Charlotte: my boyfriend, my sister, our friend Colette, and both of the girls’ boys. We ate an incredible meal at Vivace, where my sister and I split grilled bisteca with collard greens and fingerling potatoes and pumpkin risotto with seared scallops- they were both incredible. I’m excited to visit Vivace in Raleigh now! We then attended an open bar event at VBGB Beer Hall and Garden and trekked to an after-party at a high-rise apartment building in Uptown with a pretty sick view of the city skyline. This morning, we grabbed Starbucks and McDonald’s and drove to Hollymead to visit Sue and Larry.

It was all of the boys’ first times meeting Sue and Larry, so Larry put them through the ringer with a written exam that they had to pass in order to keep dating us.

Hilarious! After lunch at the farm, we went to a party with our other cruise friends at their beautiful house on a lake. Such a fun afternoon filled with cruise talk and laughter- as per usual icon smile Happy New Year & A Scavenger Hunt Surprise

Anddd speaking of the 6 of us and cruises: the other week, we all celebrated Chrismukkah, the now famous holiday that mixes Christmas and Hanukkah  Perfect for our motley little friend crew!

It started out as a fun little party- we put up Christmas and Hanukkah themed decorations, drank eggnog and Shelton Vineyard wine, and ate buffalo crack dip and latkes. Halfway through the evening, the boys demanded that the three girls stand near the Christmas tree for what I assumed was a holiday picture. My boyfriend kept instructing my sister to look in the branches of the tree, but since we’re loud giggly girls, it took about 5 minutes before that actually happened. My sister finally pulled out a small card and we looked in confusion toward the camera that was apparently recording us, not taking photos. We were so excited when we opened it up to reveal a scavenger hunt hint!

I won’t bore you with all of the details of the hunt (confusion, going back and forth from room to room, a lot of funny comments) but the last clue instructed as to look at the first letter of each clue for our surprise (for the record, just doing a scavenger hunt made us happy. We’re pretty easy to please!).

Being the bad instruction followers that we are, we failed to keep the cards together as we had been told. After a few minutes of running about to collect them, we began reading the first letter of each.

C (“Cristina!”). R. (“Cristina!”). U (Inappropriate comment). I (“CRUISE?!!!”) It was me that shouted “CRUISE!” but my sister and our friend told me to not get ahead of myself and keep going. S. E.

And then we stood in the kitchen in shock…obviously the boys hadn’t bought us a cruise, right?! It took about 10 minutes of convincing, but yup- the 6 of us will be going on a cruise to the Bahamas and Key West in just under a month!

Best gift I’ve ever received! Well done, boys, well done!

It’s one of my best friends birthdays today- happy birthday Lindsay!

We have so so many fun and meaningful memories together that it’s hard to sum up the past 5 years in words, so I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves icon smile Happy Birthday to Lindsay!

Remember when I put out a call for guest bloggers? I got several responses, including from Jennifer Durbin of the Clueless Chick. I’ve been following her on Pinterest for awhile now, so I was excited to get her proposal for a post on stress-free party planning for the holidays. Take it away, Jennifer!

For many of us the holidays are anything but stress-free with all of the shopping, wrapping, cooking and endless events, so it can be overwhelming to think about adding party planning to your to do list.  Enter the Clueless Chick.  With Party Planning Tips for The Clueless Chick, your party planning will be, dare I say it), FUN!

So stop avoiding hosting a holiday party and start creating your guest list.  From a large holiday open house, to an intimate dinner party for six, there are a few party planning tips that are guaranteed to leave you looking for any excuse to have another party:

Have fun with it

  • Forget the stress of trying to throw the perfect Martha Stewart Holiday Party and focus on throwing a party that is all “you”! Pick a party theme that is easiest for you – if cooking is your least favorite pastime, have a cocktail party late in the evening when you will only need to serve light appetizers (which you can even buy at your local wholesale club).

Setup like a pro

  • Save yourself a lot of day-of stress by setting up as much as possible the day, or week, before the party.  You can also choose a menu that freezes well so that you can do a majority of your cooking the weekend before.  Don’t forget to setup with cleanup in mind.  Emptying your dishwasher before the party is an easy way to ensure that you have a place to stash dirty dishes throughout the party.

Outsource

  • Hire a party planner, if it fits into your budget, and let the expert stress for you.  Or, a much more budget friendly option is to team up with a friend and co-host the party.  Find a friend with a “party ready” house and offer to bring the food – a perfect division of labor.  Don’t forget to enlist the help of your friendly local teenager* for anything from running errands to post-party clean up.

Now that you’ve got the secret tips for stress-free party planning, it’s time to start planning!  You have a lot of work ahead of you, but every bit of it is worth it when you see the looks on your guests’ faces.  The most important thing to remember is to have fun!  Just remember to relax and enjoy every minute of the fabulous party you are about to throw.

Until next time,
Jennifer

 My Birthday Weekend!

In other news, it’s my birthday weekend! Last year’s birthday was filled with daisies, a new car, a visit from my mom, and a great celebration with local and visiting friends.

This year I’m having a pretty low-key celebration with friends. The weekend includes a dip party, a day by the pool, a girls night out, gluten-free treats, and birthday freebies.

Stay tuned for all the details icon smile My Birthday Weekend!

First order of business: what should the official name of Triangle young female bloggers group be?! It’s quite a mouthful as is {that’s what she said}.

On to the more exciting stuff: last night, I joined a few of the blog girls (and friends!) for our second event: a wine tasting and lesson at The Wine Feed. I chose not to drink because I’m still feeling congested, but I sure did learn a lot (both about wine and about the other girls).

photo recap: wine event with the blog girls Photo credit

There was the girl who organized this event {she’s also my Twitter-turned-real-life-friend}, Sara of Watermelon Roses. There was the budding artist management professional and my fellow co-worker at The Raleigh Forum, Miss Heather of Capital H Creative. There was the reporter that I met at the Raleighwood party, Linnie of Linnie at Large. There was the girl who blogs on all things North Carolina, Katherine of Carolina Gypsy. There was the Chapel Hill healthy living coterie, Anne of Fannetastic Food and Elle of Nutritionella. And there was Rachael, the non-blogger hopefully turned potential blogger after last night’s event!

Since only a few of my close friends blog, it’s not usually a topic I get to chat about often. But this was such a fun chance to chat about blogging tips, scheduling posts, generating content, the importance of images, and other insider blogging info.

And then we all got a little weird fun:

A question to the blog girls: what was favorite part of the evening?

A question to the blog girls and anyone who’s been to The Wine Feed: what was your favorite wine?

P.S. In case you were wondering: Coterie- A small group of people with shared interests or tastes, esp. one that is exclusive of other people.

First picture aboard the Carnival Fantasy cruise ship!

I’ve been on many soul-searching, introspective trips- like last year’s 10 day Birthright trip to Israel and my Alternative Breaks trip to Belize and New Orleans. But I’ll be honest with you- my recent cruise to the Bahamas was not one of them.

I did challenge the girls with several probing questions of the day, but for the most part, my questions were: What should I order for breakfast? What should I order for lunch? What should I order for dinner? Should I drink more? What should I drink? Am I getting tan? What should we do? Does anyone want a name tag? Where are Fatty and Columbus?

Haha, deep, I know.

As it usually goes, our Bahamas cruise feels like a lifetime ago. What a trip it was- and now my body is {still} punishing me haha. There are some parts of the cruise that I’m better off not sharing here if I plan on being employed in the future {partly joking} but I wanted to share some of the highlights.

  • Starting the trip off with a bang with Policeman Carlos
  • Having yet another epic trip with my sister

sistas and i need a beach. and i need a martini. stat

    Sistas….

  • Sampling frog legs for the first time
  • Befriending Sue and Larry, our honorary parents (who invited us to spend the weekend on their farm in NC!)
  • Dressing up in pretty cocktail dresses!

formal night and i need a beach. and i need a martini. stat

    Formal night!

  • Befriending and nicknaming everyone else on the cruise including: Flo Rida, Anaphylactic Shock, Fatty, Columbus, Blaze, Macintosh, Golden Delicious, Kelly and Constable,  Bling-Bling, Phoebe, Blasov/Silly, Roman/Virgil, Music Man, Spunky Brewster and Twinkle Toes
  • Hearing “Are you guys wearing name tags? Turn the house lights on!” during the show on the first night
  • Being serenaded multiple times by Music Man
posting and i need a beach. and i need a martini. stat

Just posing with giant chess pieces. Normal.

  • Spending the day at Atlantis- seeing the amazing aquarium, riding the lazy river, and watching the dolphins!
  • Taking a tequila shot out of a plastic Ziploc bag
  • Asking the man at the front desk to call our new friends…without knowing their room number or last names!
  • Spending the day in Freeport, where we ate lunch at a cute restaurant, befriended Christine, and made up a song about all our cruise friends

freeport and i need a beach. and i need a martini. stat

First day at port in Freeport!

  • Having 2 lobster tails each delivered to us by our waiter, Bling Bling…then hearing him yell “Shots, shots, shots” every time he came to our table
  • Enjoying sushi and iced coffee on the deck by myself while watching the sun set over Atlantis
  • Riding a banana boat and hearing “Ohhhhh buddy” behind me..the whole time. Then capsizing not once, but twice haha. We got to see the ship from Pirates of the Carribean AND watch dolphins play icon smile and i need a beach. and i need a martini. stat

We rode a banana boat to see dolphins and the ship from Pirates of the Carribean!

  • Watching Twinkle Toes get his YMCA on during the first night show
  • Watching Erica kick butt- and do the chicken dance- on stage during Game Show Mania. She won a Ship on a Stick for her win!
  • Looking out over the sparkling and shockingly clear water
  • Hanging out with people for 5 days and still not having them know our real names when we disembarked
  • Having our picture taken in front of the cheesy 90s backdrops…on a beach…and in front of the “cruise ship…and on a veranda…and in Paris…and in a strange abbey thing with glasses of champagne and a grand piano….and my personal favorite: the pillow fight scene

  • And about a million more…..I’m sure this post will be updated as I think of them!
Here are a few photos that encapsulate our trip (more landscape photos to come in a different post):

I just got back from the Bahamas yesterday, so I should be doing a tribute post, right? I’m working on it but my sister and friends put so much pressure on me to have a magnificent post, so I have to put tons of thought into it icon smile youre invited: wine tasting
