As we sat at Hollymead on Saturday, we contemplated what to do with our last day. Our top choices included a trip to nearby Blowing Rock or a day at a local vineyard. Since we went to Shelton Vineyards last time, we opted for the hour drive to Blowing Rock, which I had never visited but had heard rave reviews about.

This time it was just me, my sister, and Larry- we managed to have a good time even with Larry there (just kidding- Larry reads my blog and I wanted to poke [more] fun at him!). It was a marvelouuuuus day in an adorable little mountain town. The drive to town through the mountains was beautiful, even though the leaves haven’t fully turned yet. We grabbed lattes at Revive Java, wandered through the shops, snapped a bunch of pictures, saw a couple we know from Raleigh (hi guys!), played a prank on Larry, ate lunch at Storie Street Grill (pot roast with mashed potatoes and green beans for me!), and then got ice cream at Kilwin’s (I got half cashew toffee and half signature turtle).

I would absolutely love to go back to Blowing Rock for a day or overnight. It’s a perfectly picturesque place and the perfect daytime excursion from Hollymead! Thanks for taking us, Larry icon smile A Day Trip to Blowing Rock, North Carolina

I guess I should have put more thought into the word “relaxing” yesterday. Does mowing a pasture count as relaxing? Larry was gracious enough to “allow” me to use a zero-turn radius mower on the lower pasture again- my sister got to ride horses, I got to ride the John Deere! There is nothing like sitting on that mower seat on a perfect fall day in the country with the radio playing on headphones. I’m secretly a farm girl…

Other highlights of yesterday: 5pm snacks of spicy hummus and margaritas, delicious gluten-free eggplant parmesan and red wine for dinner, watching a very sweet 50th birthday video, and watching a few episodes of Modern Family.

On the agenda today: more mowing! Then a field trip to either a vineyard or Blowing Rock!

Last weekend, I stayed in a beautiful lake mansion with some friends. The following pictures make everything look very serene and calm. What you don’t see: the 200 Solo cups scattered around, the bar covered in handles, the ping pong balls all over the floor, the people napping on couches, the mess of a kitchen, and the dining room table covered in groceries. Oh the joys of young adulthood.

What else is on your Raleigh to do list? Which of the things above have you done?

On my birthday, my sister was bursting to tell me what my gift was. I thought I knew what it was {I’ve been dying to go on a segway tour, so that’s what I figured!}, but after about 20 minutes of guessing, I still hadn’t figured it out. She told me that I was close with performance, but it wasn’t a concert, movie, or mime show. Turns out, it was tickets to see Chicago at the DPAC! Maybe I would have been a better guesser had we not gone out the night before…

 Chicago at the DPAC

This past Tuesday, we got dressed up {I wore my new Ornamentea gold filigree earrings} and headed to Durham, making a slightly rushed pit stop at Tyler’s Taproom for pre-show appetizers. We both commented that with all the changes happening in Durham, we don’t feel like we’re from there, even though we spent the greater part of our lives in the city.

After we finished eating, we walked over to the theatre just in time for the show…

 Chicago at the DPAC
  • Did you know DPAC ranked #1 in the country for ticket sales? Go Bull City!
  • I love that you can have food and drinks in the theatre. We got decaf coffee during intermission
  • The entire theatre is so well-run. You’re welcomed by greeters in red suits; there are plenty of ushers to show you to your seats; and the bathroom line, which at one point stretched across the length of the building, moved surprisingly quickly
  • Even balcony seats are worth it! We joked that we were in the “top” seats icon smile Chicago at the DPAC
  • Plays are such a welcome break from the normal going out routine of pregaming and heading to a bar
  • Christie Brinkley was sick for the performance but her understudy, Bianca Marroquin was amazing. Her portrayal of Roxie was described by the Herald Sun as “wonderful” and “hilarious,” and I couldn’t agree more. Her timing and delivery of comical lines was perfect. Apparently she’s been playing the role since 2002, which explains why she seemed so at ease
  • My three favorite songs were Razzle Dazzle {complete with falling glitter!}, When You’re Good to Momma, and We Both Reached for the Gun
  • Mr Cellophane {about Roxie’s invisible husband} made me SO sad! He was so convincingly pitiful

Thank you again to my sister for the great birthday present! We can’t wait to go back for Mary Poppins icon smile Chicago at the DPAC

As I mentioned in my Weekend in Paradise post, I went to Shelton Vineyards in Yadkin Valley, North Carolina for the first time this past weekend. It’s owned by brothers Ed and Charlie Shelton and it’s apparently the largest family-owned estate winery in North Carolina.

We were blown away by the whole place, from the cozy albeit expensive on-site grill to the beautiful grounds to the vast inside winery to the welcoming service. Overall, it was a fun experience- it didn’t hurt that Larry knew everybody there icon smile A Trip to Shelton Vineyards

I was a huge fan of the Harvest White wine, so make to try that one if you ever visit.

This weekend, I headed back to Hollymead {or “the farm” as it’s now known to all our friends} for another weekend in paradise.

Hollymead: a stunningly beautiful farm in western North Carolina that belongs to a married couple that we met on our cruise to the Bahamas back in February. They have graciously offered to host us whenever our little city hearts desire icon smile A Weekend in Paradise

Highlights

Non-stop laughing + listening to 90s music on the car ride. Writing down all the funny quotes on an Evernote. Arriving back at Hollymead and feeling at home. Meeting two new people at dinner. Eating delicious steaks with baked potatoes and salad. Cracking jokes until our stomaches hurt. Opening my birthday present {a bottle of Razzmatazz Red wine, named after Razz, the dog} and cutting into my pretty tropical cake:

DSC 0104 1024x682 A Weekend in Paradise

Seeing two baby colts down at the stable. Staying up late to chat. Waking up early-ish, eating gluten-free zucchini carrot bread, and drinking coffee. Taking a ride in the Kabota {lovingly nicknamed the Katuba}. Driving an hour to Shelton Vineyards and singing Hotel California in the car. Joking with our waitress while enjoying lunch at the on-site grill. Sara Rose and I split the jalapeno corn shrimp salad and the crab cakes:

DSC 01311 1024x682 A Weekend in Paradise

Touring the private area, where people can adopt a barrel and have a message written on it. There were several with proposals written on them, but I liked this one best:

Doing a wine tasting and befriending Judy, who kept the wine flowing:

DSC 01681 1024x682 A Weekend in Paradise

Joking around with one of the other workers. Getting Blizzards at Dairy Queen. Heading back to the farm to whip up caprese skewers, steak rolls, and horseradish and soy ginger dipping sauces:

DSC 01771 1024x682 A Weekend in Paradise

Seeing a rainbow on our way to the party at the house of other cruise friends:

DSC 01791 1024x682 A Weekend in Paradise

Eating a delicious assortment of potluck food, including addictive buffalo crack dip:

DSC 01821 1024x682 A Weekend in Paradise

Taking tequila shots. Pretending to have horrible hangovers in the morning {we didn’t!}. Learning how to use the John Deere with a mower attachment. Mowing a big pasture while listening to Miley Cyrus {this was my reward for coming back to the farm haha!}. Enjoying lunch on the back porch and looking over the entire valley as it rained.

See a common thread here? Literally everywhere the group went, we harassed befriended owners, workers, waitresses, and innocent bystanders. As someone said, “It’s like a traveling comedy act.” I may be giving us too much credit, but when my stomach hurts non-stop from laughing, I would have to agree icon smile A Weekend in Paradise Hey, at least we make ourselves laugh, right?!
